The material in the collection documents the activities of ten Civil War army generals (seven Confederate and three Union) through secondary source material cut from late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century publications including books, military reports, newspapers, and serials; very few of the clippings have citations. The material is arranged in sections by each general, whose name is highlighted, usual with blue pencil, somewhere within the body of the text. The articles and portraits cover both their military and personal lives, including business interests, family members, and obituaries. Because of the dates encompassed in the material, it is presumed that the albums were not compiled by John A. McAllister (1822-96).

Simon Bolivar Buckner, governor of Kentucky during 1887-91, was born near Munfordville, Kentucky, in 1823, to Aytell Hartswell and Elizabeth Ann Buckner. He entered West Point in 1840 and saw active duty in the Mexican War after graduation. He later became head of Kentucky's state militia, then joined the Confederate Army as brigadier general at the start of the Civil War. Benjamin Franklin Cheatham (1820-1886) was born in Nashville, Tenn.
